Smart Alec Scholarship Official Rules

The Smart Alec Scholarship Contest (the "Contest") is only open to current legal US residents who are at least 15 years old and expect to attend, within the next three years, a two-year or four-year college or university within the United States.

Applicants' participation in the contest is subject to Smart Alec's Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. All applications are subject to these Official Rules.


Applicants must be current high school students attending school within the United States, and United States citizens. Applicants must have a student account with the same email address used for submission. If you are between the ages of 15 and 18, you must only submit an entry if your parent or legal guardian consents to be bound by these Official Rules and grants you permission. Winning an award is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein.

By entering the Contest, applicants consent to all the necessary rights for the data collection, sharing and use resulting from their participation in the Contest, and as provided in Smart Alec's Privacy Policy.

Application Deadlines

Applications must be received by January 1, 2018.


All submissions must be sent digitally to If a submission entry (“Entry”) is a physical item (such as a painting or sculpture), please submit a 360° video and photograph of your Entry in your submission email. All submission emails must include the student's full name, birth date, contact email address, phone number, and zip code to qualify for Contest entry.

By submitting an Entry, an applicant warrants that the information submitted is true and verifiable that an Entry is their original work, and that that their submission does not violate any law, regulation or right of any third party. The Entry becomes Smart Alec's property. Only one Entry per person is submitted per period.


The winner will receive a $2000 scholarship towards the winner's college or university of choice and $2000 of private tutoring. The $2000 scholarship award will be awarded directly to the scholarship recipient's college or university. To receive the award, the winner must be enrolled in and attend a two-year or four-year college or university within the United States within no more than three years from the date of notification; otherwise, the scholarship will be forfeited.

The private tutoring prize will be redeemable only through the Smart Alec platform, and will become available immediately after the winner is notified. The availability of in-person tutoring may vary by region; video tutoring is available for students across the United States.

No cash equivalent prizes will be awarded. The awarding of these prizes is contingent upon full compliance with these Official Rules.

Selection of Winner

Contest applications will be reviewed by a panel of Smart Alec experts. An Entry will be evaluated based on quality, creativity, how well it answers the prompt. Smart Alec reserves the right not to award a prize if, in its sole discretion, it does not receive any qualified applications.

Winner Notification

The Smart Alec Scholarship winner will be notified by email within 90 days of the submission deadline of January 1, 2018. The winner is subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with these Official Rules. If award notification is returned as undeliverable or a potential winner does not supply the required verification within the time specified, the award may be forfeited and may be awarded to an alternate recipient.

General Terms

The winner, by acceptance of their prize, agrees to release Smart Alec, its employees, representatives, agents, contractors, assigns, advertisers, officers, directors, and shareholders from any and all liability, loss, damage, cost, claim arising out of their participation in the Contest or the award of or the use of prizes. By accepting a prize, the winner grants Smart Alec and those acting under its authority permission to use their name, Entry, photograph, voice and/or likeness, image, biographical information and statements, at any time or times, for advertising, trade, publicity and promotional purposes without additional compensation, in any and all media now known or hereafter discovered, worldwide, and on the Internet, without notice, review or approval.

By submitting an application to the Contest, applicants agree that Smart Alec shall be free to use or disseminate the Entry on an unrestricted basis for any purpose, and you grant Smart Alec an irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, nonexclusive license to use, reproduce, modify, distribute, transmit, display, perform, adapt, resell and publish such content (including in digital form) in any and all media, now or hereafter known, without additional compensation, notification or permission of the applicant or any third party.

Smart Alec reserves the right, in their sole discretion, to cancel or suspend the Contest should a virus, bug, computer problem, unauthorized human intervention or other cause beyond Smart Alec's control inhibit or corrupt the administration, security, or fairness of the Contest, and Smart Alec may disqualify any applicant who engages in or attempts any such activity.


Except where prohibited, applicants agree to waive all rights to trial in any action or proceeding instituted in connection with these Official Rules, including without limitation the Contest. Any controversy or claim arising out of or relating to these Official Rules and/or the Contest shall be settled by binding arbitration in accordance with the commercial arbitration rules of the American Arbitration Association. Any such controversy or claim shall be arbitrated on an individual basis, and shall not be consolidated in any arbitration with any claim or controversy of any other party. The arbitration shall be conducted in the State of New York, City of Manhattan, New York.

All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of the applicant and Smart Alec in connection with the Contest shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the State of New York without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules (whether of the State of New York or any other jurisdiction), which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than the State of New York.
