Lauren Shigeko Gaskill is a PhD candidate in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UC Irvine, and she holds a BA from Georgetown University in Spanish and Portuguese. She has taught beginner, intermediate, and advanced Spanish language and Spanish conversation at UC Irvine, and has taught Spanish language and Latin American Film at the University of Portland. She has tutored students in Spanish and French ranging from middle, high school, and college levels.
My son, Sean, worked with Lauren Gaskill during one of his summers home from college. He had struggled with his college Spanish class and needed to take an online summer school class in order to receive credit toward graduation. Sean met with Lauren twice per week and Lauren would go over each week's lessons, clarifying grammar questions and practicing speaking with Sean. With this support, he was able to stay on track with the course and ended up doing well and passing. Lauren was very patient and methodical. Sean enjoyed working with Lauren and I really appreciated her help. He would not have passed that Spanish class without the assistance given by Lauren. I believe Lauren's enthusiasm helped to make the Spanish course more enjoyable for my son. I would highly recommend her not only for her expertise but for excellent teaching and communication skills.
Lauren worked with me on my Spanish term papers during my bachelors program at CSULB . I would typically email her documents to review and then we would meet to make revisions. Other times, I would bring my laptop and we would go through my PowerPoint presentations. Not only did Lauren help me with grammar and wording but would discuss each one with me. She would would also discuss ideas for my papers, based on literature and cultural themes. She has lots of experience writing in Spanish, and that helped her to edit for not only grammar, punctuation, orthography, lexicon, but also for content. I would highly recommend her not only for her expertise but for excellent teaching and communication skills.
Lauren tutored my daughter for her senior year IB Spanish class. She already had a strong grasp of grammar, vocabulary and writing, but Lauren worked with her on a weekly basis to help her improve her critical reading and analytical skills in Spanish. Together they would read language materials and textbooks and Lauren would support her as she worked through the response questions. Additionally, Lauren helped her to prepare for several oral exams, helping her to build confidence in her spoken expression of Spanish. She did very well in the course passing all the IB exams. Lauren's low-key and supportive style with a fun demeanor, made the study sessions enjoyable for my daughter, despite the exhausting work required for the IB preparation.
